Why are we using ict in our classrooms?
When we look at the world around us we see how much technology is involved. When you and I were at school there was minimal use of ICT (Information, Communication and Technology) and it was generally a reward for good behaviour. Now children are more efficient with technology more than we are. If we change our teaching techniques to help our students be prepared for what their future will be like.
What is ICT though? It is an educational process which allows us to get information, to communicate with each other using electronic devices or digital equipment. The Australian Reporting Assessment and Curriculum Authority suggest that children in Foundation year have ICT included in there curriculum and there is two subject areas to cover:
The curriculum encourages the use of technology, as it allows children to create imaginary situations which the change the meaning of objects and action which they can then invent new ideas. This can then become a way to explore real-world concepts, rules and events as they role-play situations that are familiar and of interest to them.
For prep students when using ICT helps them to develop a range of skills. This includes: Mouse manipulation, keyboard awareness and programming skills, all in which helps prepare them for their futures. There are four ways in which ICT can be used in a classroom; as a teaching tool, as a learning tool, as a recording tool and as a reward tool. All these points help towards the children develop life-long skills.
The three main reasons I as a teacher believe that ICT being implemented into the curriculum are:

- Design and Technologies - students use design thinking and design technology to create design solutions.
- Digital Technologies - students use computational thinking and ICT systems to define, design and implement digital solutions.

- Engagement in their learning with each other and themselves.
- Allowing them to be Creative with various ways of expressing it.
- The importance it now has in the real world.
